There are three songs which this painting reminds me of:
If you haven't heard that third one ("Mexicali Rose" by Gene Autry) I encourage you to give it a listen. It's a really sweet old-timey song. My husband used to play it to me long ago when we first met.
I had a lot of challenges with this painting. Once I laid down all of that hot color in the background, I had to work hard to make the rose stand out. That's why I went with the dark foliage. It surprised me by taking on a Mexican look. It's not so much that I started out to make a "Mexicali Rose." I think it's more that both the Mexican painters and I were solving the same artistic problems.
Another funny thing about this is that I painted it shortly after "Good Old-Fashioned Love," and I did it on the same watercolor page. They really contrasted with one another!
As always, this painting is available in my shop as a print. And did I mention that I also offer phone cases?
